Mobile App Marketing Audit: 20 Checks Before You Scale Spend

September 9, 2026by Marco CoronadoMarketing
A checklist and analytics dashboard representing a mobile app marketing audit

Scaling paid spend before your funnel is clean is one of the most expensive mistakes an app team can make. You're not buying growth — you're buying amplified leakage. Every dollar that goes in exits faster through a cracked retention floor, a broken attribution setup, or a store listing that converts at half what it should.

This audit exists to stop that. Work through all 20 checks before you raise your budget. Some will take 10 minutes. A few will surface problems you didn't know you had.

What This Audit Covers

The 20 checks are organized across five layers of the app marketing stack:

Layer Checks What You're Verifying
Creative & Messaging 1–4 Ad hooks, value props, creative fatigue
Targeting & Channel Mix 5–8 Audience fit, channel efficiency, spend allocation
Attribution & Measurement 9–12 MMP setup, event tracking, data integrity
App Store Optimization (ASO) 13–16 Listing conversion, keyword coverage, visual assets
Retention & Monetization 17–20 Onboarding, engagement loops, revenue events

If you fail more than two checks in any single layer, stop. Fix that layer before touching spend.

Creative & Messaging (Checks 1–4)

Check 1: Does your hook land in the first two seconds?

Pull your top five ad creatives and watch them on mute. If you can't tell what the app does within two seconds of silent playback, your hook is broken. Users on TikTok, Meta, and Google UAC are scrolling fast. The visual has to do the work before the audio ever kicks in.

Check 2: Is your value proposition specific?

"The app that changes everything" is not a value proposition. "Track your deliveries in real time, down to the street" is. Go through every live ad and every store listing. Circle every phrase that could apply to any app in your category. Those phrases need to go.

Check 3: Are you rotating creative on a defined schedule?

Creative fatigue on Meta and TikTok typically sets in within three to five weeks on a moderate budget. If you're running the same creative for eight weeks, your CPIs are inflated and you probably don't know it. You should have a documented creative testing cadence — if you don't, read our 12-week creative testing pipeline breakdown before scaling anything.

Check 4: Do your ad creatives match the post-click experience?

Run the journey yourself: click the ad, land on the store listing, install the app, complete onboarding. Every step should feel like a continuation of the same promise. If the ad shows one UI and the app shows something materially different, you're paying for installs you're immediately losing.

Targeting & Channel Mix (Checks 5–8)

Check 5: Do you know which channel produces your best LTV users, not just your cheapest installs?

Cheapest CPI is the wrong optimization target if those installs churn in week one. Pull cohort data by channel. In our engagements, we frequently see apps where the channel with the highest CPI delivers users with three to four times the 30-day retention of the lowest-CPI channel. Scale the right channel.

Check 6: Have you tested Apple Search Ads Basic vs. Advanced?

If you're on the App Store and haven't run Apple Search Ads, you're leaving high-intent installs on the table. ASA users have already decided they want an app solution — they're searching for it. Start with exact-match on your core job-to-be-done keywords before expanding.

Check 7: Is your audience segmentation actually doing anything?

Log into your Meta Ads Manager or Google UAC. Are your audience segments producing meaningfully different CPIs or conversion rates? If all your ad sets are performing within 10% of each other, your segmentation isn't real — it's just creating complexity that makes optimization harder.

Check 8: Are you spending on channels your users actually use?

This sounds obvious. It isn't. A logistics app targeting owner-operators in their 40s will not get efficiency from TikTok. A Gen Z fitness app will. Map your channel mix to your actual user demographic before you commit budget.

Attribution & Measurement (Checks 9–12)

Check 9: Is a mobile measurement partner (MMP) installed and verified?

Adjust, AppsFlyer, Branch, and Singular are the standard options. Without an MMP, you're relying on self-reported channel data, which is always inflated and always disagrees with itself. If you don't have an MMP, stop here. This is the highest-priority fix on the list.

Check 10: Are your conversion events firing at the right points?

Log your event schema. At minimum you should be tracking: install, registration complete, first meaningful action (the event that correlates with retention — different for every app), and purchase or subscription start. If any of these are missing or misfiring, every optimization decision you're making downstream is built on bad data.

Check 11: Is view-through attribution inflating your numbers?

VTA windows of 24 hours or more on display channels frequently cause double-counting. A user sees a banner ad, never clicks it, installs organically a week later, and the spend gets credited. Check your attribution window settings across every channel and make sure they reflect actual user behavior, not channel defaults that favor the channel.

Check 12: Can you separate paid installs from organic installs?

If your MMP isn't correctly tagging every paid source, organic and paid installs are pooling together. Your blended metrics will look better than reality. Pull your organic baseline from a period before any paid activity and compare it against your MMP's organic bucket now.

App Store Optimization (Checks 13–16)

Check 13: Is your title including your primary keyword?

The app name field in both the App Store and Google Play carries the highest keyword weight of any metadata field. If your primary keyword isn't in the title, you're surrendering ranking potential that no amount of paid spend compensates for.

Check 14: Are your screenshots telling a story or just showing UI?

Screenshots are the single highest-impact visual element in store conversion. The first screenshot should communicate what the app does and for whom. In our experience, adding a clear value-proposition header to the first screenshot typically moves conversion rate more than any other single ASO change. UI screenshots without context convert poorly.

Check 15: Are you tracking keyword rankings and adjusting metadata?

ASO is not a one-time setup. Pull your keyword rankings monthly at minimum. Identify keywords where you're ranking in positions 6–15 — those are your highest-leverage targets for metadata optimization because you're close to top-five visibility. Keywords where you're already in top three need monitoring, not work.

Check 16: Do you have a strategy for ratings and reviews?

Ratings directly affect conversion rate and rankings. The in-app review prompt timing matters enormously — triggering it after a user completes a successful action in their first session produces meaningfully higher rating rates than triggering it at launch. Check your current prompt placement and make sure you have a process for responding to negative reviews.

Retention & Monetization (Checks 17–20)

Check 17: What is your Day 1, Day 7, and Day 30 retention?

If you don't know these numbers, audit them before anything else in this section. Benchmarks vary by category, but if your Day 1 retention is below approximately 25%, no amount of UA spend will produce a profitable business. This is the floor. Fix onboarding first.

Check 18: Does your onboarding deliver the core value of the app before asking for anything?

Registration walls, permission requests, and paywall hits before the user experiences the app's primary value are retention killers. Map your current onboarding flow and identify every friction point that appears before the user reaches their first "aha" moment.

Check 19: Is your push notification strategy segmented or are you blasting everyone?

Blasting unsegmented push notifications trains users to ignore you and accelerates churn. Segment by user behavior: users who haven't opened in five days get a reactivation message; users who completed a core action get a progression prompt. These are different messages with different jobs.

Check 20: Are revenue events tied to behavior, not just time?

Subscription and purchase prompts that trigger based solely on days since install are less effective than prompts triggered by a specific behavioral signal — for example, a user who has completed the core action three times is a higher-intent target for a subscription ask than a user who installed four days ago and has opened once.

How to Score Your Audit

After running all 20 checks, categorize each one:

Status Definition
Pass In place, verified, performing as expected
Fix needed Identified issue, has a clear remediation path
Blocker Broken enough that scaling spend before fixing it is net-negative

Any "Blocker" in attribution or retention means do not increase spend yet. Fix the blocker, run the check again in two weeks, then revisit the budget decision.

A clean audit doesn't guarantee growth. It does mean that when you scale, you're scaling something real.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a mobile app marketing audit take?

For a solo founder with full access to ad accounts and analytics, approximately one to two days to run through all 20 checks. For a team without clean attribution or with multiple ad accounts, plan for three to five days including data pulls and stakeholder alignment.

Which check should I prioritize if I can only fix one thing?

If you don't have a mobile measurement partner installed, that's check nine and it comes first. Without clean attribution, every other optimization decision is guesswork. After MMP installation, Day 1 retention is the next highest leverage point.

Should I run this audit if I'm pre-launch?

Checks 1–8 and 13–16 are applicable pre-launch. Checks 9–12 and 17–20 require live data, so run the full audit approximately 30 days post-launch when you have enough installs to draw conclusions.

How often should I repeat this audit?

Approximately every 90 days if you're actively scaling spend, or any time you're about to materially increase budget — say, doubling or more. Also run it after any major platform change: iOS updates, app redesigns, or a new channel launch.

Does ASO actually affect paid UA performance?

Yes, directly. Your store listing is the landing page for every paid install. A low-converting listing raises your effective CPI because more ad-driven clicks are dropping off at the store. Improving store conversion rate compounds the ROI of every paid channel simultaneously.

What's a realistic timeline to go from a failing audit to ready to scale?

In our engagements, most teams with identified blockers can work through critical fixes in three to six weeks if they prioritize aggressively. Attribution setup is typically fastest. Creative and onboarding improvements take longer because they require design and development cycles.
